To finish off our apple unit we learned how to make apple cider using a juicer. We started off reading the book Max and Mo Go Apple Picking where the class in the story made applesauce instead of apple cider. Then students took turns putting apples into a juicer.
Then we put the cider from the juicer into the crock-pot, added some ingredients, and let it cook. When the cider was done, students had the cider and wrote their opinion on if they liked apple cider or not. You can find the writing prompt in our apples mini-unit.
Also during literacy workshop time students worked on word work where they made sentences about apples.
We watched a video about parts of an apple from Hasemeier Early Learning resources. Along with this video was an emergent reader that we read together as a class.
Then we put together an apple with construction paper and labeled the parts. You can find this activity and many other apple activities from our apple mini unit.
Last week was our apple unit. We learned about living things and how they grow and change. We talked about how apples are living things and we learned about their life cycle. We read the book A Day at the Apple Orchard and made a life cycle of the apple using the book as our guide.
For math we worked on learning quantities and number words 1-10. We read the emergent reader book Apples in the Basket and drew the number of apples that matched the words on the page.
To finish off color week We read the story Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Bill Martin Jr & Eric Carle. We recreated the sequence of the story by making paper bag puppets of the brown bear with the other animal characters in the story. You can get the paper bag puppets from Mrs. Ricca’s Kindergarten.
For the past two weeks one of the reading skills the students have been learning is how to compare and contrast their lives to books. This week we reread and discussed the story Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes and talked about white was probably the color he liked the best since those were the shoes he had. Students decided which color is their favorite color and made their own Pete the Cats (wearing their favorite colored shoes) with construction paper. They also completed the sentence “I love my ________________ shoes.”
This last week our theme was Color Week. Our goal was to be able to read all the color words and celebrate a color a day. Each day we celebrated a color by bringing in something for show and tell that represented each color. Monday was red, Tuesday was orange, Wednesday was yellow, Thursday was green. We also played games that matched each color per day on www.starfall.com. Finally we completed poems by writing the color sight word in the blank lines. The poems can be found here.
Thursday as part of our family unit we read the book My Wild Sister and Me, and we talked about how the boy and his sister liked to dress up and pretend to be animals. Then we discussed about what we like to do with our family and then illustrated pictures about it. I dictated what they said verbally in their stories.
For math we made a class graph that illustrated who had only brothers, only sisters, both brothers and sisters, or no brothers or sisters in their family. We compared the numbers and discussed which category had the most and which category has the least. These activities and more can be found here.
Finally as a treat we had one of our students parents come in to the class to read a book about a special family.
Last week was our unit on families; how our families roles and responsibilities are different, and activities that families do.
We started off by reading an informational text called What Makes a Family. For math we made a family tree, gluing apples on our tree that match the number of people who are in our immediate family.
For writing we’ve been learning how to draw circles and sticks and how to be illustrators. We drew our family portrait that matched the same number of family members on our family tree. The activities can be found here.
As part of our All About me unit each student received a puzzle piece. On the puzzle piece students drew and colored pictures that resembled themselves. They drew pictures of themselves, their favorite colors, favorite food, favorite toys, etc. Students where then encouraged to find others with puzzle pieces that they felt matched their pieces.
This last week our theme was All About Me, where students learned about what makes them who they are. They learned about different body parts and how they look different and similar from others, discussed their favorite things, and learned about other classmates. It is an introductory unit to the bigger International Baccalaureate unit of Inquiry Who We Are.
We started of the unit by learning how to read to self and partner reading with the emergent reader book, All About Me. We read the book as a class first then students practiced reading by themselves and reading to partners. Finally we filled out a web map and discussed the main idea and details of the story.
