Shoot for the moon, even if you miss you'll land among the stars!

Category Archives: text to self

Apologies for the long time between posting.  Things have been busy at home and at school.  As we start our first International Baccalaureate unit we are learning about fall-time traditions such as Halloween traditions.  We read an informative text called Celebrate Halloween.  We discussed how one Halloween tradition was to dress up in costumes.  Students wrote stories about their favorite costumes.  The sample writing below says “I like the unicorn”.

For math we created a class bar graph to show what kind of costume is our favorite costume.  Students put a sticky note above the category of the costume that they will wear during Halloween, or their favorite costume.  We discussed the category with the greatest number of students and the category with the least amount of students.

For art we did two projects; Frankenstein paper plates and Frankenstein puzzles.

For the past two weeks one of the reading skills the students have been learning is how to compare and contrast their lives to books.  This week we reread and discussed the story Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes and talked about white was probably the color he liked the best since those were the shoes he had.  Students decided which color is their favorite color and made their own Pete the Cats (wearing their favorite colored shoes) with construction paper.  They also completed the sentence “I love my ________________ shoes.”

Last week was our unit on families; how our families roles and responsibilities are different, and activities that families do.

We started off by reading an informational text called What Makes a Family.  For math we made a family tree, gluing apples on our tree that match the number of people who are in our immediate family.

For writing we’ve been learning how to draw circles and sticks and how to be illustrators.  We drew our family portrait that matched the same number of family members on our family tree.  The activities can be found here.

This week we have been talking about our families and how they are important to us.  We read the story “I Love It When You Smile” by .  We made text to self connections by writing about how someone in our family tries to make us feel better when we’re sad.

We then made a family tree that showed how many members of our family lived with us.  Then students shared with the class a picture of their family and shared about who the members of their family are.

On Monday we started our unit on fall.  During our calendar time we sang the song Four Seasons in a Year by Harry Kindergarten and came up with movements to go along with the song.  Students had fun trying to guess which season Harry Kindergarten was describing.

We then created a read life venn diagram to compare and contrast summer and fall.  Students did a cut and paste activity sorting pictures into seasons that they best fit in.

We read the story Clifford’s First Autumn by Norman Bridwell and made a list of fall activities that Clifford and Emily Elizabeth participated in.  Then students made a text to self connection by writing about what activity from the story that they like to do.

Today we went through a Brain Pop Jr. lesson on fall and did a autumn leaves finger stamping art project.  Students pressed their fingers into ink pads and made autumn leaf trees and picked which fall color they liked the best.
