We read the story Christmas Cookies and discussed vocabulary such as the word tradition. We also made a list of our Christmas traditions.
Then we wrote Christmas math stories about making gingerbread cookies, then we made Christmas ornaments using tempura paint.
Last week we finished up a fun unit full of Thanksgiving activities. For our word work we created a flip book with repetitive sight words and things that you do on Thanksgiving.
We also read Thanksgiving books on things that we like. Then students used their knowledge of sight words to write sentences using the word ‘we’.
For math we read the story “The Great Turkey Race” discussed the problem and solution of the story. Then we created our own math story problems using addition and pictures of turkeys for the visual.
Finally we learned about the life of Pilgrims and Wampanoags on Scholastic.com’s First Thanksgiving website. Students made designs on Wampanoags using pattern block cutouts.
Continuing on with our Winter / The Four Seasons theme, we learned a new song / poem called The First Snow. We learned new winter vocabulary and practiced memorizing the words as we sang along to the song on CD.
Afterwards we cutout a picture of the boy from the song and helped him get dressed to go play outside. We colored and cutout the different winter clothes and discussed the correct sequence the boy would need to put them on.
Finally we wrote directions for others on how to get dressed for winter, and during centers students could create Venn Diagram to compare and contrast winter to summer!
Today we read the story Christmas Cookies which is a book that introduces us to many different vocabulary words and teaches us lessons about giving and thankfulness. Reading this book; sparked a lot of conversations about things we remember about past Christmases and what we do during the Christmas time. We wrote about our favorite Christmas memory and made presents for our class secret Santa.
As we continue on with our weather / winter units we read a new poem and learned new describing words to the song “Snowflake”.
Then we discussed the author’s purpose and what the author was really trying to say. We discussed how even the title was Snowflake, the poem was about how people are all different from each other like Snowflakes. Then we made paper snowflakes and wrote how we are like our snowflakes, using describing words from the poem and other describing words we have learned.
We read the story “Christmas Cookies” which is a story that discusses the process that a girl goes through to make cookies for Christmas. In each page there is also a vocabulary word that children learn.
We discuss the main idea and details and students think-pair-share the words that they remember from the book. Then they illustrate one vocabulary word that they chose and 1st graders use it in a sentence.
Students are provided with maple leafs with fall vocabulary words we’ve been learning in science and social studies. Student’s cut out their leaf and drew a picture illustrating their vocabulary word. Then students wrote a sentence using their word.
