This week we started our unit on cold weather animals and the season of winter. We read the book Eskimo, Eskimo What Do You Hear discussed about different kinds of animals that live in very cold places such as the North Pole or Antarctica. We also read an emergent nonfiction text and student wrote about what their favorite polar animal is.
The next day we watched a science video about the Walrus and discussed different things that walrus have to adapt to such cold weather. For art we made construction paper walrus art.
As we continued our holidays around the world unit, we read Mrs. Greenberg’s Messy Hanukkah and watched a National Geographic video for kids that discussed Hanukkah traditions. Students wrote about how people in Isreal celebrate Hanukkah. At the end we sang the song Hanukkah, Hanukkah by Jack Hartmann. As we continued the fall unit we read the story Autumn’s First Leaf by Steve Metzger and wrote about if we were Pointy what fall color would we want to be.
On Thursday we went outside to go on a fall scavenger hunt. Students founds things such as; different colored leaves, acorns, twigs, bark, and nuts.
To finish off our apple unit we learned how to make apple cider using a juicer. We started off reading the book Max and Mo Go Apple Picking where the class in the story made applesauce instead of apple cider. Then students took turns putting apples into a juicer.
Then we put the cider from the juicer into the crock-pot, added some ingredients, and let it cook. When the cider was done, students had the cider and wrote their opinion on if they liked apple cider or not. You can find the writing prompt in our apples mini-unit.
Also during literacy workshop time students worked on word work where they made sentences about apples.
For the past two weeks one of the reading skills the students have been learning is how to compare and contrast their lives to books. This week we reread and discussed the story Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes and talked about white was probably the color he liked the best since those were the shoes he had. Students decided which color is their favorite color and made their own Pete the Cats (wearing their favorite colored shoes) with construction paper. They also completed the sentence “I love my ________________ shoes.”
Thursday as part of our family unit we read the book My Wild Sister and Me, and we talked about how the boy and his sister liked to dress up and pretend to be animals. Then we discussed about what we like to do with our family and then illustrated pictures about it. I dictated what they said verbally in their stories.
For math we made a class graph that illustrated who had only brothers, only sisters, both brothers and sisters, or no brothers or sisters in their family. We compared the numbers and discussed which category had the most and which category has the least. These activities and more can be found here.
Finally as a treat we had one of our students parents come in to the class to read a book about a special family.
Last week was our unit on families; how our families roles and responsibilities are different, and activities that families do.
We started off by reading an informational text called What Makes a Family. For math we made a family tree, gluing apples on our tree that match the number of people who are in our immediate family.
For writing we’ve been learning how to draw circles and sticks and how to be illustrators. We drew our family portrait that matched the same number of family members on our family tree. The activities can be found here.
As part of our All About me unit each student received a puzzle piece. On the puzzle piece students drew and colored pictures that resembled themselves. They drew pictures of themselves, their favorite colors, favorite food, favorite toys, etc. Students where then encouraged to find others with puzzle pieces that they felt matched their pieces.
