To finish of the week of our fall unit, we read the story Autumn’s First Leaf by Steve Metzger and discussed the problem and solution of the story.  We then talked about if we were the character Pointy, what fall color we would have liked to have been.

Later that day, we went on a fall leaf hunt.  Students tried to collect all five of the fall colors.  We took the leaves back into the classroom and sorted them by color and made a graph of our favorite leaf color.

On Monday we started our unit on fall.  During our calendar time we sang the song Four Seasons in a Year by Harry Kindergarten and came up with movements to go along with the song.  Students had fun trying to guess which season Harry Kindergarten was describing.

We then created a read life venn diagram to compare and contrast summer and fall.  Students did a cut and paste activity sorting pictures into seasons that they best fit in.

We read the story Clifford’s First Autumn by Norman Bridwell and made a list of fall activities that Clifford and Emily Elizabeth participated in.  Then students made a text to self connection by writing about what activity from the story that they like to do.

Today we went through a Brain Pop Jr. lesson on fall and did a autumn leaves finger stamping art project.  Students pressed their fingers into ink pads and made autumn leaf trees and picked which fall color they liked the best.

Last week had our unit on cold weather animals or winter animals.  We read an interactive story called “Penguin, Penguin” and labeled main ideas and details on a thinking map.  Finally students made penguin glyphs based on their preferences about winter.

We also read nonfiction books about winter animals and got into partner groups and practiced reading easy reader books about winter animals.  Finally we practiced following directions and made TLC art walrus.

This last week we moved on in our fall unit, and started our mini unit on pumpkins.  We started out reading nonfiction books about pumpkins, then we filled out a web thinking map about things we can do with pumpkins.

Then we read “The Biggest Pumpkin of All” and I brought in a pumpkin so that students could investigate the pumpkin.  They measured the pumpkin using connecting cubes, tested to see if the pumpkin floats, and explored the inside and outside of the pumpkin.

We learned a new song called “Autumn Leaves” by the learning station.  We also read the story “Autumn’s First Leaf” and talked about our favorite fall colors and practiced completing sentences with our sight words.

As the first official day of fall is around the corner we start our unit on autumn with the story “When Autumn Comes”.  We talked about what we learned about fall by creating a hoola-hoop Venn diagram that compared and contrasted fall and summer.  Then the class sorted pictures into winter, spring summer, or fall.

This week we finish up our unit on weather and seasons.  We also continued our study on tall tales and we read a story called Snow Globe Family.  One of our reading skills we have been learning is how to visualize parts of the story or make mind movies.  So I read part of the story to them without showing them the pictures first.  Then we came up with the things we visualized in a class list.

We then created our own snow globes and wrote about what we would do if we lived in a snow globe.  We hung up our drawings and writing in the classroom.
