Last week was our reindeer theme!  We started by reading Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and Rudolph’s Bright Christmas.  We also read a nonfiction story about caribou.  As a class we labeled a Venn diagram that showed the similarities and differences between Rudolph and caribou.  We also made cut and paste Rudolph’s.

    


The whole week we read several different gingerbread stories and we discussed differences and similarities in the stories.  We read Gingerbread Man and Gingerbread Boy and filled out a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the different characters of the stories.

 

On Thursday we read Gingerbread Baby and discussed how the ending is different where the Gingerbread Baby doesn’t get eaten but has a house built for him by Matti.  Then we created houses for our own gingerbread babies.  You can buy an updated version of this activity here.

  

 


Just to catch everyone up on our Thanksgiving unit last week:

We used the Scholastic First Thanksgiving Virtual Field trip to learn about the Wompanoag Native American tribe that made friends with the Pilgrims and helped them survive the winter. We compared the Pilgrims Daily life to the Wompanoags Daily Life. The comparisons included food, houses, clothing, chores, and games.  We also created pilgrim hats and turned them into headbands that we wore out to the buses.

During math we’ve been learning about shapes and how to design patterns.  We created a native american head and shirt. Then we used real pattern block to practice making our own design for the shirts. Then we used paper pattern blocks that we glued to decorate the Wompanoag’s shirt. Last we counted how many of each pattern block we used and wrote it on the recording sheet.  You can find a FREE COPY of this activity here.

 


Last week was Thanksgiving and we did many activities related to the holiday.  We read the story I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie and used pictures from Texas Kindergarten Teacher to retell the sequence of the story in our bellies.

   

For partner reading, students read the emergent reader book Thanksgiving and then completed the sentence at the end of the book writing something about Thanksgiving that they liked.


We continued to learn about food groups and the importance of having a well balanced meal.  We watched Sid the Science Kid’s video on food groups where the students sorted their lunch into different food groups.

After we watched the video we made our own lunch boxes and picked out a “balanced meal” that contain all five food groups.  Students pick 3-4 items and put them into a cut out lunchbox.

On Friday we read The Very First Thanksgiving Day.  We wrote about the different vegetables, fruits, and meats we would put in our cornucopia and trace and cut our own foods.

   


This past week we celebrated veterans day and learned about how the men and women who served in the armed forces are heroes.  We started out by reading the book Hero Dad and writing letters to two parents of our students that are veterans, thanking them for their service.  The writing prompt can be found here.

On Friday we created construction paper soldiers as well as got to check out a few military vehicles from the Army National Guard.  The art project can be found in this Veterans Day Unit pack here.

 

On Monday of this week we invited our friends and family who are veterans to come to a school-wide assembly where we could honor their service.  We sang My Country Tis of Thee and said the national anthem as well as our principal read a poem.  At the end of the day we wore headbands we cut out and colored out to the bus.  Teachers can find this headband activity here.


Sorry that this post is happening so late, things have been super busy in the Kindergarten All-Stars universe.

Last week Wednesday was Halloween and what a busy time it was!  We started out the morning by reading The Vanishing Pumpkin.  We cut, glued, and colored the problem and solution of the story.  The problem of the story was that “The Old Man and Woman’s pumpkin that they had been saving for pumpkin pie, disappeared.”  The solution to the story was that “The wizard had taken the pumpkin to carve a jack-o-lantern and he also made them pumpkin pie.”

Then we got dressed up in our costumes and carved pumpkins.  We got to feel the squishy pumpkin insides and count seeds!

Afterwards we did Halloween stations where each student got to choose from 3 different activities; paper bag puppets, hanging ghosts, and Halloween paper plate masks.

At the very end of the day all classes Pre-K-2nd grade participated in the annual Halloween costume parade.  Students had a great time walking in the parade and watching the other classes as they went along.
