This Friday was our Valentine’s Day party and we had great time!  We started out by handing out the rest of our Valentines for the end of the day and read Valentine’s Day books.  We then colored and completed books called I Love…

For shared reading and writing we read the book Will You Be My Valentine and then made a list of Valentine’s Day words.  We picked our favorite words and made Valentine’s Day mobiles.

For Math we enjoyed candy hearts math centers.  We graphed with our hearts, sorted them by colors, and estimating the number of candy hearts that can fill a bigger heart.  We also enjoyed Valentine’s Day snacks.

For science we used alca-zeltzer tabs and water to make candy hearts dance.  Students learned how to make hypothesis on simple science experiments.  They guessed what they believed would happened to the hearts.

We read the story “Stop, Drop, and Roll” and talked about ways to stay safe if there is a fire.  Then we made fire engines with the words ‘stop, drop, and roll’ on them.

This week celebrated our colors and learned color words in Kindergarten.  All of the school dressed up on a specific color each day, and in kindergarten we have had various activities to go along with color week.

Here are the colors that everyone dressed up as for each day.

  • Monday – Red
  • Tuesday – Orange
  • Wednesday – Yellow
  • Thursday – Green
  • Friday – Blue (Spirit Day)

The first day, a few of the kindergarten classes created a bar graph of their favorite color.  We used the bar graph to decide the most popular color.

Students also worked on a color page each day at centers that corresponded with the color of the day.  At the end of the week (tomorrow) students will take all of the pages and make them into a color book.

Today students found things in magazines, cut them out, and added them to the corresponding color poster.

Moving on from the fall harvest unit we talked about where food comes from.  Students learned that food doesn’t just come from the store but much of our food that we eat comes from farms.  We watched Sesame Street visit to a farm (since there are no farms out here in rural Alaska).

We then discussed the main idea of the movie (there are many foods that can come from farms), and illustrated the key details we saw in the video in a web graphic organizer.

Today we read the story Click Clack Moo: Cow’s That Type discussed cause and effect.  We then created an emergent reader book talking about what other animals on the farm might want.
