This Friday marked the official end to our unit on Community helpers.  To celebrate all that we’ve learned and to help the students gain awareness of what is out there, we invited family members to come in and talk about the jobs that they’ve had or currently are at.

Before the visitors showed up, we came up with a list of questions that the class could ask the visitors.  We thought up of questions based on Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How.  Then students picked their favorite job and thought of a question they could ask a person with that job.

Our visitors came and our students had a lot of great questions including ones that weren’t even on our list.  We had a former nurse, two teachers, a grocery store manager, and someone that goes crabbing.  Students had a great time learning about their jobs and then our visitors stayed with students and read to them during free choice centers.

Sorry for the long absence in updates it has been quite a busy month with Spring Break and basketball tournaments!

Our class has been learning about places in our community and jobs in our community; and around the world!  We went on a class trip to talk to members of Shaktoolik, and created a whole Shaktoolik map of the places that the students felt were important.  We have been reading books about community helpers and their tools.  We have also been doing literacy centers with a community helper twist!

As we contiue with our community unit; this week we started our sub-theme about transportation.  We listened to the song / story called “We All Go Traveling By“.  The book is turned into the song on youtube here.  We used a story map to illustrate the main idea and details of the story.

At the end of the story the people in the modes of transportation were all heading to school.  So we made a connection to the story and talked about how we got to school.  We made a graph displaying how each member of our class got to school.  The choices were getting to school by walking, truck, four-wheeler, or snowmachine (snowmobile for those of you living in the lower 48).

For writing we wrote about how we get to school each day and used clipart to illustrate our mode of transportation.

We are now learning about communities in our K-1 All-Star Class and this week we started with learning about communities that we live in.  We read several stories about City vs. Country including the book, “Country Kid, City Kid”.

We then watched a Sesame Street video about a city kid going to visit his friend in the country.  We learned even more about the differences about the city and the country.

We took the details we learned in the story about both the city and the country and we put them into a venn diagram.  Then we used the data we put in the venn diagram to decide whether we would prefer living in the country or the city.  For our writing we made TLC art and wrote a persuasive piece on why we prefer either the city or the country.

For centers students explored different types of communities in the city or country.

As one of our last units in K-1 this year we have been studying the differences between the city and the country.  We read “City Kid, Country Kid” an informative text as well as “Town Mouse, Country Mouse”.  We filled out a venn diagram filling out text to text comparisons between the two stories.

Then we wrote a persuasive piece about why which is better, the city or the country.  We also created an art piece depicting which place we believed is better.

We also made character comparisons between the Country mouse and city mouse and wrote about how their life was different from their friends’ life.

Last week we finished up our unit on Our Community and Communities around the world.  Mr. Daniel’s dad is a retired police officer and he decided to share his job with the class.  Since it is expensive and difficult for him to fly from Houston all the way out to our isolated village, we had him Skype with the whole class!

Mr. Mike (as our class called him) showed us his uniform and all the things he used to use while on the job.  He also showed his revolver and explained to us about gun safety.  The K-1 All-Stars got to interview Mr. Mike and we completed our KWL chart about Police Officers and Mr. Mike.

As we move along with our community helpers unit we learned about firefighters and watched a Mr. Rogers Neighborhood video that showed us about firefighters.  We also learned that not only do firefighters help put out fires, we also learned that they teach us about fire safety.  We then read a book called “Stop, Drop, and Roll” and completed a sentence starter telling our audience that we would remember to do if there was a fire.
