This last week was our unit about season and fall.  We learned the song “Four Seasons in a Year” by Harry Kindergarten and then compared / contrasted pictures of clothes & activities.  We determined whether the pictures can be a part of summer, fall, or both.

Then we discussed the differences between the seasons and how our lives change based on the seasons.  Finally we did a cut and paste activity sorting pictures into the seasons.

For the past two weeks one of the reading skills the students have been learning is how to compare and contrast their lives to books.  This week we reread and discussed the story Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes and talked about white was probably the color he liked the best since those were the shoes he had.  Students decided which color is their favorite color and made their own Pete the Cats (wearing their favorite colored shoes) with construction paper.  They also completed the sentence “I love my ________________ shoes.”

We read the story “Thanksgiving Day” and learned about the very first Thanksgiving.  Then we cut and glued pictures that illustrated the first thanksgiving in the correct sequence.  For our art and writing we made TLC art pilgrims and wrote about what we were thankful for.

As the first official day of fall is around the corner we start our unit on autumn with the story “When Autumn Comes”.  We talked about what we learned about fall by creating a hoola-hoop Venn diagram that compared and contrasted fall and summer.  Then the class sorted pictures into winter, spring summer, or fall.

In the past few days we started learning about reading skills and academic vocabulary.  To fit along with our back to school theme, we read If You Take a Mouse to School.  As a class we learned how things happen usually as an effect of something else happening.  We created a t-chart to display some examples.  Then together we worked on a cutting and gluing activity that illustrated those causes and effects.

Today we continued to work on learning about our names.  First we read a sing along book called “The Wheels on the Bus” by Raffi and then sang along to the book after we learned that version of the song.  Then we came up with our own silly verse of the wheels on the bus by using the first letter in our name to complete the verse.  Instead of making the line, “The wheels on the bus go round and round”, we changed the line to “The wheels on Mr. Bowen’s bus go Bumpity Bumpity Bump.”
