Sorry this is so late, things have been busy over here.  A few weeks ago we celebrated Presidents day and we learned about two famous presidents; George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  We read stories about both presidents and read an easy reader  called All About America.

After we read the story about George Washington; we made a list of describing words to describe George Washington and wrote about what we learned.  Finally we made two presidents out of construction paper and cotton balls.  On one side we made George Washington, on the other side we made Abraham Lincoln.

In math we’ve been learning about sorting and positional words.  We’ve also been learning how to read simple books using the projectable books on Reading A-Z, on the SMART board.  This is done whole group first to introduce students on how guided reading is done.  Since we’ve been working on the sight word ‘the’ this week; we read the story “The Classroom”.

As a class we main idea and details by talking about the school items found in the book.  Then we sorted pictures into three categories; things in the classroom, clothes, and transportation.

This afternoon for a read aloud we read the story Joey the Jack-O’-Lantern.  We discussed the problem and solution of the story.  Since the story is an easy reader and has lots of repetitive text, students were given the opportunity to retell the story during center time.  Students then illustrated the problem and solution of the story by making their own construction paper jack-o’-lanterns.
