The kindergarten all-star class got their first introduction to leveled readers using the Reading A-Z’s projectable books.  We read the story The Classroom and learn the sight word ‘the’.  Students learned how to use a picture to figure out unknown words.  We used the smart board and read the book on the projectable version.  We made a web thinking map outlining the main idea and details of the story.  Students then sorted pictures of different items into three groups; school items, transportation, and clothes.

In math we’ve been learning about sorting and positional words.  We’ve also been learning how to read simple books using the projectable books on Reading A-Z, on the SMART board.  This is done whole group first to introduce students on how guided reading is done.  Since we’ve been working on the sight word ‘the’ this week; we read the story “The Classroom”.

As a class we main idea and details by talking about the school items found in the book.  Then we sorted pictures into three categories; things in the classroom, clothes, and transportation.

For the past few weeks we have been learning about our community and the different people that are in it.  We’ve also been learning about how other communities are different from each other, and about the different jobs in our neighborhood and throughout the world.

We started off the unit discovering our neighborhood and the important places in it.  We then made our own individual map of Shaktoolik as well as a whole class map of our neighborhood.  We took colored pictures of places in our neighborhood and labelled the map with markers.

Later on in our unit we started learning about people and helpers in our neighborhood.  Many of our Guided reading books taught us of the different people who helped us, we watched a few people in our neighborhood songs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2bbnlZwlGQ), and designed our own neighborhood in the building block center.

For those that have visited the rest of my website, a big portion of my afternoon schedule is focused on Literacy Workshop and Guided Reading.  Here are some updated pictures of what our Literacy Workshop has been looking like.

If you visit my Guided Reading Section in my curriculum page, you see a description of what reading workshop is.

Each day students are placed in tiered groups high-medium-low and are given various centers to interact with.  Each center reinforces previous skills taught such as word families, sight words, phonics, and the like.

Then myself or my teacher assistant will call over students to read books based on the reading level they are at.  Each book selected is related to the theme that we are at in our class.  In small groups students read their books and are given comprehension activities that go along with the book.

One of our reading groups read “This Is My Bear”, and then they classified and sorted pictures that they saw.  The students are guided to recognize the pictures can be sorted by pictures of Teddy Bears and pictures that are not Teddy Bears.

A new section to my website has been added!  The section is called curriculum.  This section will contain information / ideas for what will be covered in Kindergarten / 1st grade and how I plan on managing my classroom.  The first section that has been posted is information in reading workshop and examples of how to implement guided reading in conjunction with your school’s reading program.  You can take a look at the new section here.
