As we continued our Polar Express unit we read the book   The Night Tree,  which is a book about a family that goes to decorate a tree with food that is made to look like a Christmas tree.  The book is very different than  The Polar Express however it is a great introduction in showing how to compare popular stories.  We discussed how in both stories the characters had hot chocolate.

 

We then watched a video on how to make hot chocolate and then wrote directions on how to make hot chocolate in three easy steps.  For math we made hot chocolate mug art with cotton balls acting as marshmallows.  Students wrote how many marshmallows were in their cup.  To have a copy of the mug activity click here.

    

 


Today we continued our unit on the Polar Express.  We read the story Christmas Kitten and compared the gift that the boy got (the bell) as the first gift of Christmas in the Polar Express and the gift Sophie got (a kitten) in Christmas Kitten.  Based on the story Christmas Kitten we guessed on what we thought Sophie would have picked as the first gift of Christmas.  Then we wrote about what we would pick.

During read to self, students read the emergent reader Santa Has.. and filled in the blank line with the word ‘has’ and drew the picture of what the sentence said Santa had.

For math & art students completed a cut and paste puzzle that matched numbers with their number word.  Students then colored the picture showing The Polar Express and the conductor.


Just to catch everyone up on our Thanksgiving unit last week:

We used the Scholastic First Thanksgiving Virtual Field trip to learn about the Wompanoag Native American tribe that made friends with the Pilgrims and helped them survive the winter. We compared the Pilgrims Daily life to the Wompanoags Daily Life. The comparisons included food, houses, clothing, chores, and games.  We also created pilgrim hats and turned them into headbands that we wore out to the buses.

During math we’ve been learning about shapes and how to design patterns.  We created a native american head and shirt. Then we used real pattern block to practice making our own design for the shirts. Then we used paper pattern blocks that we glued to decorate the Wompanoag’s shirt. Last we counted how many of each pattern block we used and wrote it on the recording sheet.  You can find a FREE COPY of this activity here.

 


We began our Halloween theme today.  We started by playing a candy corn ten frame smart board game from the website http://www.abcteach.com.  The game starts where students are presented with a number of candy corn in a ten frame, they answer how many candy corn they see, and click on the trick or treat bag to find the answer.  The final part of the game students are present with a number and they add the correct number of candy corn to the ten frame.

Then students were given a Candy Corn Ten-Frame book.  They colored the candy corn in the book and matched the correct ten-frame to the the page that they are working on.

As we finish up our first week of school, our kindergarten & 1st grade friends spent some time getting to know each other using math.  Kindergarten wrote their names, cut them apart, and glued them back together.  Kindergarten counted the letters in their name and shared it with the rest of the class.

In 1st grade we’ve been learning about addition strategies so the 1st graders used what they’ve learned to share about themselves to the rest of the class.  The activity can be found over at First Grade Smiles.


For the second day of Polar Express week, students made glyphs based on questions about trains and Polar Express.

Then we read the story Christmas Kitten by Vivian French.  We talked about how the girl in the story really wanted a kitten for Christmas, and how the boy in The Polar Express got the bell he really wanted as the first gift of Christmas.  We then wrote about what we would pick for the first gift of Christmas.

This week we started our apples unit and began the unit by reading the story Ten Apples up on Top by Theo. LeSeig.  Then students picked a number and made a cut and paste art project that illustrated how many apples they can count up on top of their head.
