Yesterday as we continue to learn about apples and how they are an important to our community and our state, we read a story called The Biggest Apple Ever. We learned how to identify a problem and solution in a story and created a co-constructed chart that identified the problem and solution of the story.
Today we read a number book called Ten Red Apples where in the story each farm animal ate one apple from the apple tree until there were zero apples left. Then students worked on completing an emergent reader that counted apples one at a time from one to ten by writing the sight word that we’ve been learning so far this week, see. Students learned the repetitive text to help them learn how to read one word at a time.
For science we continued our discussion on living things and we talked about how apple trees are living things and apples are part of the apple tree that contain the seeds. We also learned about the different parts of an apple and we created and labeled a diagram of an apple.

A new year and new faces but still the same fun! It is my goal to post more this year to share with you all that we’ve learned. We have started out the school year learning lots about procedures and kindergarten expectations. We’ve also read books about going to school for the first time. One book that we read was Dinosaur Starts School. We compared how Dinosaur felt about the first day of school and compared it to our first day of school feelings. Next we created an Anchor Chart discussing the problem and solution in the story. Finally we made pennants illustrating our feelings using emojis.
For our phonics we’ve been beginning to learn letter names and sounds using a group of characters called “AlphaFriends” from the Journeys reading program. The AlphaFriends help our students say the names of the letters as well as the sounds they make. They then used crayons to “rainbow write” in their journals the letters.
This week we began our Halloween theme and we read the story The Vanishing Pumpkin. We talked about the problem and solution of the story and illustrated it using markers. We also retold the story by putting pictures from the book back into the correct sequence.
We are becoming stronger and stronger independent readers in Daniel’s K-1 All-Stars. Today we read another book from our Read On Your Own series of books called In the Van.
In this story the text is easy for emergent readers to decode. Students learned about how to find the problem and solution and used both the text and inferencing from the pictures. We filled out a story map labeling the characters, problem, solution, and setting of the story. Then as a class we brainstormed a few ideas for writing our own stories with a problem and solution.
For phonics we have been working on learning words that begin with the letter v. All students were provided with magnetic letters ‘v’, ‘a’, and ‘n’. They were encouraged to figure if they could make a word with those letters. Once everyone created the word van they were also provided with the letters f, p, t, c. Students made words using those letters and wrote them down in a list.
This afternoon for a read aloud we read the story Joey the Jack-O’-Lantern. We discussed the problem and solution of the story. Since the story is an easy reader and has lots of repetitive text, students were given the opportunity to retell the story during center time. Students then illustrated the problem and solution of the story by making their own construction paper jack-o’-lanterns.
