This last week students learned about our community and the different places that our important to our community. We also learned about the different helpers in our community and talked about what we want to be when we grow up. We started with reading the book Pizza at Sally’s and then created an anchor chart with the order of how Sally made the pizza.
For writing students worked on copying writing prompts and completed a sentence talking about what they want to be when they grow up. They also worked on adding details to their pictures illustrating what they want to be.
For art students colored and traced a flip book that illustrated themselves as different community helpers. They glued a picture of themselves on top of the flipbook to make them appear to be wearing the uniform of the community helper.
As part of our fall unit we read the story Pumpkin Pumpkin by Jeanne Titherington. In the story it was about a boy who planted a pumpkin seed and the stages it goes through as it grows. We then completed a sequencing activity that showed the life cycle of a pumpkin.
To finish off color week We read the story Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Bill Martin Jr & Eric Carle. We recreated the sequence of the story by making paper bag puppets of the brown bear with the other animal characters in the story. You can get the paper bag puppets from Mrs. Ricca’s Kindergarten.
Today begins our last week of school before Christmas break and it also begins our Polar Express week! We started off by reading The Polar Express. We used pictures and illustrations to create a flow map to re-tell the story. Then on their own students put the story back in the correct sequence with a cut and paste activity.
During center time students put together A-Z alphabetical order train puzzles. For math we reviewed 2D shapes and made a train glyph based on answers about trains and The Polar Express. The train activity comes from Simply Kinder.
This week we read many different gingerbread stories (Gingerbread Man, Boy, Baby, Bear, etc). The first story we read was the classic version Gingerbread Man. We retold the story using character cards and then did a cut and paste activity that showed the correct sequence of the story.
Then we brainstormed things that are scary to us and filled out a web thinking map answering things that we would run from. We then took our brainstorming, picked one thing that was the scariest and wrote about them.
The next day we looked at different ways to write the story of The Gingerbread Man. We made a list of different action verbs and then made gingerbread men with a mini verb booklet.
This week is Polar Express week! We started the week with reading the book Polar Express by Christ Van Allsburg. After we read the story we retold the story with sequence cards by putting the cards in the correct order. Then students completed a cut and paste activity to retell the sequence of their story. Polar Express retell came from Simply Kinder.
Last week we had our mini unit on The Mitten by Jan Brett, and we began with reading it whole group. Then we created an anchor chart and discussed the elements of the story.
Next we completed a mitten sequence cut and paste activity; illustrating the order that the animals entered in the mitten. Finally students retold the story by acting out the story using masks printed out from Jan Brett’s website.
This week marks my favorite week, The Polar Express week! On Monday we read the story and students retold the story by putting pictures in the right order. They also shared with the class what happened on their part of the story. Finally they retold the story in correct sequence order by doing a cut and paste activity.
Today students wrote about what they would choose as the first gift of Christmas (A silver bell, pony, and genie bottle). At the end of the day students created a train glyph, answering questions about trains.
We read the story “Gingerbread Boy” and sequenced the story in the correct order of who chased after the Gingerbread boy.
We also watched another version of The Gingerbread Man on the smart board and wrote about things that we would run away from. We also made a gingerbread flip book using describing words.
