This week we read many different gingerbread stories (Gingerbread Man, Boy, Baby, Bear, etc).  The first story we read was the classic version Gingerbread Man.  We retold the story using character cards and then did a cut and paste activity that showed the correct sequence of the story.

Then we brainstormed things that are scary to us and filled out a web thinking map answering things that we would run from.  We then took our brainstorming, picked one thing that was the scariest and wrote about them.

 

The next day we looked at different ways to write the story of The Gingerbread Man.  We made a list of different action verbs and then made gingerbread men with a mini verb booklet.


Last week was Thanksgiving and we did many activities related to the holiday.  We read the story I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie and used pictures from Texas Kindergarten Teacher to retell the sequence of the story in our bellies.

   

For partner reading, students read the emergent reader book Thanksgiving and then completed the sentence at the end of the book writing something about Thanksgiving that they liked.


We continued to learn about food groups and the importance of having a well balanced meal.  We watched Sid the Science Kid’s video on food groups where the students sorted their lunch into different food groups.

After we watched the video we made our own lunch boxes and picked out a “balanced meal” that contain all five food groups.  Students pick 3-4 items and put them into a cut out lunchbox.

On Friday we read The Very First Thanksgiving Day.  We wrote about the different vegetables, fruits, and meats we would put in our cornucopia and trace and cut our own foods.

   


This past week we celebrated veterans day and learned about how the men and women who served in the armed forces are heroes.  We started out by reading the book Hero Dad and writing letters to two parents of our students that are veterans, thanking them for their service.  The writing prompt can be found here.

On Friday we created construction paper soldiers as well as got to check out a few military vehicles from the Army National Guard.  The art project can be found in this Veterans Day Unit pack here.

 

On Monday of this week we invited our friends and family who are veterans to come to a school-wide assembly where we could honor their service.  We sang My Country Tis of Thee and said the national anthem as well as our principal read a poem.  At the end of the day we wore headbands we cut out and colored out to the bus.  Teachers can find this headband activity here.


Today we read the story The Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything and used musical instruments to retell the parts of the scarecrow that follow the lady.

For writing students wrote stories about a spooky night.  Some students chose to write fiction stories, and some students chose to write about things that really happened.

For art students used a dice and matched numbers to shapes that they have to draw.  They draw each shape as a part of a body of the scarecrow.  As students complete this activity they start to notice how they are drawing the scarecrow in an unusual way.

  

Finally students were given the instruments and the book to use at our dramatic play center for free choice centers to retell the story on their own.

We finished off our Polar Express week with talking about Santa.  Students describe him using the Polar Express as an example as well as other Christmas related stories.  Students were able to describe how he was kind, giving, jolly, and friendly.  Then they wrote their Christmas lists and created their own Santa art.

To be like Santa students also began making Christmas ornament presents for their friends and family.  They took clear ornaments and put two different colors of paint and swirled them around to make a marble effect.

As part of our Polar Express week students got to try out hot chocolate before our Polar Express Day.  I showed students how to make hot chocolate and they wrote 3 step directions on how to make it.  Students also drew pictures on the back of the directions.

Students got to sample the hot chocolate and then we made a class graph on if the class liked hot chocolate or not.  It was a very lopsided graph since everyone said the liked hot chocolate!

At the end students cut out a cup of hot chocolate on construction paper and wrote about what they thought hot chocolate is.
